It's possible to do, but I'm not sure it would be worthwhile because the resolution of the decals is so small, only 16x16 for SD texture packs, so it's going to look very blocky and probably ugly.

I just thought whilst looking over this topic.
What if you could apply the decals to the player's screen?

Of course, there might be a limit to the amount of decals applicable to prevent the screen being clogged with decals.

The script might be something along the lines of
Decal [player] [decal] [x,y] -applies to player's screen only
Decal [decal] [x,y] -applies to all screens

[decal] might be an ID like clan banners, or just the name.

...or something like that.

Opinions?

HudLayer [Name] [shape] [x,y,w,h] [r,g,b,a]
Basically since hudbars have no limit.... Could geometric shapes pasted on screen have no limit?
A creative player could overlap skillfuly and create there own 'visor or 'cracks' even blood splatter.

............... This could be so awesome. Basically, It would allow for a completely custom HUD.

I would just like to bring this up, I LOVE the Wood Bracing Decal, However I have 1 problem with it, The metal bits on the corners seem more steampunky than medieval, Could those possibly be removed for texture packs other than Steampunk HD?

Another thing, Could we get a version of it with the cross bar facing the other direction, And another with two cross bars forming an x shape?
