Sequence Nine : The Sound of Freedom

Spoiler for Hidden Content:
As we drove on the highway, we decided to search for some radio channels out there. We finally pick one up and the man just wrapped up his news update. "Hey guys, I might not return soon, Probably go off but I just wanted to play one more song before I go, thinking it will give you hope that America will fight back,
" The radio man said. We listen to the song, and Sydney, the nurse, John, and I start to get emotional. Sydney starts to break down, and I soon start to shed a tear. "Dad, I don't want to drive anymore, can Melissa drive?" Sydney asked.

"Sure honey, Melissa, are you up for the task?" I replied.

"Why not, She needs to rest, she probably hasn't slept in days." Melissa replied.

Minutes have passed, and I soon start to think about the people we left behind in Baltimore. It made me burst out crying on the inside, but never showed any emotions on the outside. Sydney was sniffing in the back seat, and it must be more tough on her, considering she never got to say goodbye to all her friends, only leaving immediately. All of this happened so suddenly. I don't even know if my friends down at the office know if I am alive, or even if they are. We are just all separated from loved ones, who we might never see again.

It was 6 Am when all of the buses and cars soon started to pull into this long road. As we drove up, there was a building, like a mansion that seemed to be the evacuation place. We soon park our cars in the  lot outside, and I grab my wheelchair to get into. "Hey jack, this seems to be the place we might be living in for the next couple of months. maybe longer, so get used to it now." John said to me. He gave me a wink to me right after, probably thinking to himself that we are not living here for long.

"Well don't get your hopes up, the inside is what counts." Melissa answered.

"Ya, they must have a massive supply of emergency all underground, and a generator for the patients." John said.

"I better get some people to help us out with the patients in our car, and get them to medical beds." I replied.

I wheelchair up towards the ramp, and I was the first to open the doors. Inside was nice looking, Like an unused hospital. It had the main area, and the rooms that could fit thousands of people. The only problem with this place is its very noticeable from the sky. But this place seems it is going to be home for a long time.

Doctors and Nurses soon rush in the people who need the care most and hook them up to machines first. Soon John walks in with tons of water from when we evaded the little store off the highway."This might not look like a lot of water, but go downstairs into the cellar, and you will find supplies that should last us a year." John said.

"I see, so what is this water for?" I asked.

"It for the nurses and us for now, so we don't have to waste the current supply." He answered back.

"That is a smart strategy, good thinking, but get back to work." Melissa randomly said, as she walked through the doors. "ahh, home sweet home, It smells like heaven already." She saying all of this sarcastically, and I kind of find it funny.

This place had rooms for the doctors, nurses, and helpers, and could fit up to two hundred people. This place was huge, with about 400 rooms, the 100 went to the doctors and nurses, and the other 300 could fit 8 patients to a room. We only have about 1800 patients, so that gives us room left over. This place was that large, and continues to surprise me.

"Well I better find my room, so I can get some rest. I will see you guys in about three hours, I need to rest my legs." I told everybody.

"See ya Jack, wake you up later." John said.

"Goodnight dad." Sydney whispered.

I wheelchair to the closest elevator, and soon go in. This thing was brand new and was never used. I press the wrong button and end up going downstairs. The elevator opens up, and before I press the button going back up, something catches my eye. I soon get out of the elevator, and shut the light on. "Well this just got interesting."

Sequence Ten : When you Think Your Safe

Spoiler for Hidden Content:
It has been five days since the beginning of the end of America. I feel we may not win this, or survive this, but its my only hope to pray to get through it. I lay in bed, reading the book I started a little over three days ago, and soon gives me ideas to write a book of my own. I would call the book The Fall of a Nation and would be about what I and others have been these past days. This book may never become published, but I hope it does some day.

Its 7 AM and I better go get breakfast at the cafeteria. I grab the wheelchair and head downstairs for a morning bowl of cereal and a apple. I chomp my way through like I haven't eaten real food in ages, and bring my dishes to the bin. I now head to the elevator only to be stopped by John. "Hey, where are you going?" John asked.

"I was going back upstairs. Why do you ask?" I replied

"We were looking for some people to help with moving some things on the third floor. do you want to help?"

"I have important things to do, I have to wake Josh and Syd up, but I would love to help some other time. Okay?" I'm not often a good liar, so I have no idea if he thinks i'm suspicious or what. I head in the elevator alone and hit the B button. Once it came to a stop to downstairs, I go and turn on the lights, then go exploring. I only got to see this place once yesterday, but it caught my eye the first time. It seems to be from the cold war. this control center might have been for missiles, but i'm not entirely sure.

There are things that make it obvious from the cold war, considering there are some old equipment with the US flag on it, having targets on the country around Moscow. This must be an old launching base, possibly forgotten by the US. This place sheds some old history, but why would it at all be in the basement of a hospital? Once I got towards another room, new stuff starts to pop up. Another launching room appears through other doors.

I don't think this is a cold war room. These computer monitors look brand new. And I don't think that in the 70s they had this kind of technology. Things are not adding up about this place.

I go back in the elevator, and head outside for more clues. As I head down the road towards another road cutoff. It leads towards a tunnel. It is shut closed, but then there are rusted out locks only holding it in place. I try to open it up with my hands, but I might need something tougher to open this door. I grab a pickax lying on the ground near me, and start to swing at it with trying to make as little noise as possible. After a couple of swings, the lock finally breaks loose, and I open the door that unlocks the gate to the tunnel.

As I walk in, the lights start to turn on, leading all the way down to another door. I wheelchair pretty far down this tunnel before making it to another close off. This one was easy because it had already been open, probably not shut completely by the last guys who were here. Opening the door, I find one of the most amazing discoveries I have ever found.

There were artillery trucks, army vehicles, tanks, missiles, bombs, packages, guns, army wear, as far as the eye can see. I now understand why this whole building is on a hill, because this is under it. When did they store this stuff? This looks more new than it should be, like 2012 new. Why would all of this be stored underground in the middle of nowhere either? All of these questions I want answered.

I lock up some things, But keeping them open in case I want to come down here again. Its been about 15 minutes being gone, so I better head back. I don't know if I can tell anybody about this at all. What happens if they find out I know? I don't think anything really bad could happen, the Army might not go after me, considering there is no leader for this country.

"Hey Jack, we need your help down in room 128, will you get some medicine labeled with L23DX5, and get it stat." Melissa yelled from across the hallway.

"Sure, in the cabinet?" I replied.

"YES! an stat!" She yelled.

"I grab the medicine and hand it to her. She then runs off and I don't see her for the rest of the day. Maybe I need more rest, this is a lot to handle. I'm the only one here who knows about the secret military base under this evacuation hospital, and I didn't get much sleep last night. Helicopters were flying by, causing noises echoing through the hospital, waking up patients and children.

I might just go back to sleep, sadly I could only sleep through the daytime, when they aren't planning to attack. My life was complete before all of this madness, and now its screwed up due to China and Iran teaming up to dissolve us. I wish things would come back to normal, where everybody was happy.

Hours pass, and I soon wake up to a faint explosion from outside. It alarms me a little, and I look out of the window, just seeing a field. Off in the distance, there was a faint cloud that caught my guard, in a puffy mushroom form. Puffy mushroom form?

I immediately turn on the TV, seeing if I have any reception to news channels. the cloud was north of us, and this could be some normal cloud but I don't think so.

"This is News 7 at noon now reporting that America has just lost their capitol. Washington D.C has been demolished just 10 minutes ago, in possibly the worse case scenario to hit this country. China may have just used a Nuclear weapon to blow up the city and could have just killed hundreds of thousands of people."

Sequence Eleven : It was all a Dream

Spoiler for Hidden Content:
"Ahhhhhhhhhh!" I screamed.

"Whats wrong!" Yelled Sydney.

"I woke up from a dream that felt so real. Washington was nuked and the country didn't know what to do. I thought I woke up but really I was still in the dream." I told her. "That dream felt more real than any other dream I have ever had in my lifetime. When did I fall asleep, because I don't remember it."

"Dad, your in the medical care room, you passed out when you went to the basement. They think a gas that was leaking out of pipes knocked you out, or you might have fallen and hit your head. " She told me.

"Well, whats in the basement? I don't understand, I saw trucks, bombs, cars, army wear, guns. I even saw a missile base!"

"Dad, your going crazy, the only thing in the basement is supply and the generator." Sydney said.

This doesn't make sense at all. Maybe I was dreaming that whole time." How long have I been sleeping for?" I asked.

"Since yesterday, around 7 am."

"What time is it right now? " I asked.

"Its about 10:30, so ya you have been sleeping for about 14 hours. You need to rest, because something is not normal in your head right now." She answered.

I think for a moment, and soon try to get up."I am not going to be here when I can go help others who need it." I told her.

"No dad! you need to rest. I thought I lost you yesterday. You had no pulse for two minutes, and I almost had to tell your 7 year old son that you were gone. Please, you have a minor concussion too." she explained. "The doctor said you need to rest it off and try not to move much."

"Okay, I won't get up, I'll just stay in bed all day." I obviously just lied to her. I am going to get out of this death bed the second she takes her eyes off me, if she even does. Anyways, I think I could do fine today, just turn on the news and relax in a warm and comfy bed. As I turn on the TV with the remote, the doctor walks in, and it was Dr. Stevens. "Hello Jack. You suffered a huge fall yesterday when something happened in the basement. How are you today?" He said.

"Feel like crap...and my legs still don't work." I replied.

"Ya, I actually want to talk to you about that. We did some tests Jack, and it seems you suffered permanent damage. You may be paralyzed from the waste down for the rest of your life." He told me.

"But, how? They told me I will be back on my legs in a couple of days. How is this happening?" I yelled.

"Well, it seems you never recovered and there was problems when trying to help you yesterday too. Anyways I am going to go, I have to check on another patient as well. I will see you around though Jack."

I now turn on the TV and check if there is even a news station on. As I clicked through the channels, all they said was please stand by on every channel. So now I think that the TV network is down, and we already know there's no luck with the radio. I am dead in the water. This day can't get any worse.

I try to get up and grab my wheelchair. Sydney is in the other room with Josh and I am going to try to sneak out. I try to take off the bandage going around my head, but its stuck on. I get the wheelchair and pop right into it with no sound at all." I am very clever!" I said to myself." Now to slowly chair down the hallway and I will be in the cafeteria."

Today shouldn't be tough, after all its Saturday. America may be at war, but that's not going to stop me from eating a blueberry bagel with cream cheese and butter, sided with bacon and eggs. My munchies won't go away, since I haven't eaten in two days. " Oh I can already sniff the food now!" I said to myself. Crap, Dr. Stevens. I hide into the room right next to me as he went by so nobody could see me sneak to the food. Sydney was going down the hall to the second I poked my head out. This isn't good at all, It feels like an army camp.

She was asking Dr. Stevens in the hallway and I couldn't really make out what they were saying, probably about me but who knows. Finally I can go out in the hallway freely. I rush faster and faster towards the cafeteria doors, when suddenly John walked through the doors. "Hey! Jack! how are you feeling!" Yelled John.

"SHHH! be quiet, I am not supposed to be exploring the hallways, Sydney is looking for me." I whispered to him.

"Oh, okay, do you want to sit with me at lunch and talk?" He asked.

"Sure sure. As long as I eat. Lets go now! and by the way, they do have blueberry bagels, bacon, and eggs right?"

Sequence Twelve : The Silent Night
Part One

Spoiler for Hidden Content:
Tonight was rather more peaceful than all of the other nights. Tonight I feel that everybody can finally sleep well. I know i'm ready to go to bed, its 10:30 and iv'e sneaked around all day trying to be myself. Considering I am in a worse state than I was a couple of days ago, I feel fine. Nobody thinks I feel nor look fine, but I should be the one who knows my own body. Tonight was quiet, with no panicking or crying, just quiet. I maybe paralyzed, have a minor concussion, broken hand, and a sprained leg but that doesn't make me wanna have fun. Tonight I think i'll go down to the cafeteria to go to poker night, where its a casino without blowing off all of your money.

My daughter will somewhat stop me from playing craps or blackjack, but i'll sneak past her nonsense. I get ready, fit into some worthy clothes, and hop into my wheelchair.

"DAD! Where the hell do you think your going!" Yelled Sydney." I told you to stay in bed, you need the rest."

"Aww shut up Syd, i'm going to play poker no matter what, now go away." I told her.

"Dad! you have a con-" I stop her there. " Who cares, a little bump in the head won't stop me from having fun, so stop ruining my fun life. If I want to destroy my liver from drinking too much I will, so I deserve to control my own life, not to be controlled by somebody else."

"Okay, you know what, i'm not even going to deal with you tonight about this. I already chased you around the hospital too much, so you can very much screw off." she hollered.

"Thank you for being like this. Now you need to rest because I think your PMSing." I joked to her about.

"Dad, your gross, now I hope you loose in craps tonight..." She laughed, and gave me a stare like I did something wrong.

Anyways, I move out of the room and start to stroll down the hallway. I push the doors open and a man right there greeted me. "Nice to meet you sir, would you like to have some chips?" He asked.

"John, is that you? in a suit???" I asked.

"Shhhh, people don't know that, where do you think iv'e been for the past few days. I didn't shave and tried to be sneaky planning this. People needed to play games after all we have been through, and people are enjoying it. Its funny how people don't know who I am, and think i'm very suspicious." John explained.

"Well, see you around!" I replied.

I walk around, and they must have found some old blackjack tables from the basement. It looks like a legit casino, and seems fun too. They have red curtains and red rugs, black chairs, and special lights. How did they do this in a couple of hours? Music was playing, and it was all jazzy and had a nice tune to them. People were cheering every time somebody won, and they were having a good time. "Drink sir Jack Roy?" Melissa asked.

"Oh, yes I would have one, and by the way, where are my best chances tonight?" I asked.

"The Blackjack table seems to be on fire, people winning left and right. so I would go there first." She said.

"Thanks for the tip, and have fun serving those drinks to people. half of them can't drink you know...."

"Ya, I figured that out, so I only hand them out to the nurses and doctors, but your good enough." She winked at me and ran off. Boy is she something else.

I head on toward the first table I see, and ask to join in. I joined in about two minutes after and got my hand. I had one Jack and a King. I had twenty, but I had a strange feeling to risk it. So when it came to my turn, I thought for a second, and put some chips in. He asked" Hit or stay?" "Hit, please." I asked. When I got my card, I checked it, and I called blackjack. people started to clap and my son  started to cheer" GO DAD!!!"

I got happy for a second because I just won the first game I joined in. "Tonight I could already tell will be a good night." I said to myself. "What the hell is that in the sky!" Yelled a man by the window.

All of a sudden, a loud explosion came from out of the cafeteria. I run to the window to see what was happening, but I wasn't the only one who was curious. As I looked out, I saw off in the distance by the west wing a helicopter in the sky. It seems to be armed, and ready to do some damage. It started to shoot rocket from the sides, and more loud explosions echoed through the halls. Some windows shattered from the vibration, and I back away from the window slowly. A helicopter randomly just shines a light through the windows in the cafeteria, and I try to take off. I run through the doors, when the helicopter began to shoot. It shattered the windows and people started to scream.

I took off not even getting to look for a second behind, taking off to my room before something worse happens. Something clicked in my head and I forgot my son in that room! I turn around immediately  but couldn't get past the crowd of people running out of the room. The noise was really loud as the helicopter shot bullets. Right before I entered the door, a massive explosion sends be backwards as the doors open to flames.

I soon open my eyes, not able to get up, and see Josh running with other people at the end of the hall. Soon Melissa and John run towards me and pick me up. "JACK! ARE YOU ALRIGHT!" yelled Melissa. "What? I can't hear anything? whats going on?" I asked.

"Your ears might be damaged, hold on, lets get the hell out of here!" Hollered John.

This is the big attack, they must have been planning on attacking us for a long time. I get into the wheelchair and soon wheel down the hall as fast as possible trying to catch up to the group. Out of nowhere a huge explosion knocks out the hallway in front of us, separating us from the group. "This isn't good at all Jack, run that way right the hell now! Wr can get to them by going through the other hallway on the east wing!" Yelled Melissa.

"I bet we can, but what if they find us! don't you know that the east wing has windows all across?" John replied.

"Its our best shot, but there is another way." I told them.

The lights go out, and the alarm triggers. The backup system kicks in and more alarms turn on. I might die tonight, I might actually die tonight, and never see my kids again.

"We need to figure out a plan immediately, before they find us and kill us" Melissa asked.

"Nobody is dying at all!" John replied.

"People just died in the hallway and the cafeteria, okay, so now we need to worry about us!" Melissa said.

"This is insane, I cannot live like this, at least not now, this is happening too fast." John whispered.

"I think its worth going through the east wing, lets go to it and give it a try." I recommended.

We head through the hallways to get to east wing, as behind us noises of gunshots and smashing windows made us run faster.

Sequence Thirteen : The Silent Night
Part Two

Spoiler for Hidden Content:

We tried to be as silent as possible heading towards east wing, hoping it hasn't been found yet. I think of an idea that might just be impossible for me, climbing down to the basement to get to the other side. I have to think fast because we are passing the door soon, and this way will be a lot safer to get to the others.

"Wait guys! Stop!" I yelled.

"Shhh!" whispered John. "what Jack!"

"I have an idea, go through this door right now, its the stairwell to the basement." I said. They looked at me like I was crazy, like I was crazy.

"But, Jack. Your legs..." Melissa mumbled. "You won't be able to make down those stairs. You could go down the stairs, but there's a chance you'll fall."

"Its better than going through east wing where there's a bigger chance of us all dying. The windows will make us very noticeable. This is the best chance we have, i'd rather go there than anywhere else." I explained.

"Well its the best chance we got, and I personally don't want to risk east wing either. " Melissa said. John nodded too and he began to talk."I vote for the stairwell, I don't want to risk it. Jack, do you think you will make it? its a lot of stairs, and the angle is very steep."

"I want to do it, I want you guys to be the safest, and I will be fine." I probably won't be fine, considering those stairs were going to be the death of me. "Lets go now, before they find us."

We headed through the door, and the second it shut, a loud explosion came from the hallway. A couple of more seconds out in the hallway and we would have been dead. We start to go down the hall, and finally come to doors that lead to the stairway. Going through the doors, we noticed that the basement was pretty far down. It was about three flights of stairs, at a steep angle, more than they should be.

I hope I don't trip or fall, or anything that will be disastrous. I feel bad that I have the broken legs and it will take triple the time getting down, but now going back, I wish that I never got into that car accident. I wish I was more safe driving, not being alarmed to an explosion behind me. This is all my fault if they die.

We finally approach the first stairwell. Then Melissa comes up with an idea."What if instead of carrying him down on the wheelchair, John carries him down, and I bring the wheelchair to the bottom floor."

"Not a bad idea, and sounds easier than both of us carrying him down and tiring us out." John asked.

"I think that is a good idea, lets try it out." I replied.

John begins to pick me up out of my seat and I put my hands around his neck. I'm not holding on tight enough for him to be strangled by me, which is a good thing so he doesn't struggle going down steps holding a 160 Lb. man. Melissa goes in front of us, and runs down the stairs, trying to get the wheelchair down there before John gets to the Third flight of stairs. The good thing about my wheelchair is that its fold able, and is made of aluminum, so its weighs pretty light.

John lets me down real quick once we reach the second flight of stairs. He probably needs to rest, those steps can be very steep and cause him to loose balance very easily. Melissa yells from below, " Hey whats the wait! John get off your fat lazy ass and carry him down, then soon enough it will be my turn."

"Fine, but jeez you need to stop yelling! I am trying as hard as I can." John replied.

John picks me right back up and starts to approach the next flight of stairs. This is his last flight then Melissa will trade off with him. "Ahh! Jack I am so sorry! I am so sorry Jack!" Yelled John.

He soon lets go of me and I go tumbling down the stairs. My legs break my fall once I crash to the bottom. "JOHN! WHAT THE HELL! JACK ARE YOU OKAY!" screamed Melissa.

I swear the other side of the world could hear her from how loud she yelled. "Shhh! i'm sorry so sorry! but you need to be quiet! they could hear us!" John hollered.

"I am okay, honestly, my legs broke my fall." I answered. "Anyways, pick me up so we can get down there fast"

"Okay, but we need to hurry, we don't have much time left, they might find us." Melissa replied.

Melissa picks me up and she is much stronger than John, which I never expected. We head down the steps faster and easier than when John brought me down. We finally reached the fourth and final flight of steps. She actually got me down in a breeze and before we knew it, I was getting settled back into my wheelchair.

"Okay Jack, are we all set to get to the other side?" Melissa asked.

"We should be, it should be right down this hall and I think there is a ramp. We are in the taller part of the hospital so there are not many stairs like this side has. It should be just a ramp that goes up, and we will be where they are." I explained.

"Do you want me to push you Jack to make it quicker to get-" Melissa stops there and soon everything got quiet. it sounded like a door opened from the stairwell above us, and soon alarmed all of us. " We need to hurry the hell up, I think they are coming downstairs." Melissa whispered.

Melissa grabs my wheelchair and starts to push me as fast as she could. John, behind us, starts to run too. We all tried to be quiet and get the hell out of the hallway before they find us. We come up to this elevator, and we notice its the emergency elevator that runs through anything. John immediately stops us and asks us," Guys guys guys, hold up! this is an elevator that can run through anything, power or not. "

"Good idea, get in right now!" Whispered Melissa.

We go into the elevator and press floor one. As the elevator goes up, we hope that nothing wrong happens while we are in it. I can tell John is hoping that the wire cable doesn't snap or the elevator shuts down. That would be the end of our journeys. Soon the elevator door opens, Melissa and John get out just before me and Syd yells out to me, " Daddy, your alive!"

I get ready to get out of the elevator when all of a sudden, a loud snap occurs just over my head, now I know its the end of my world.
