By making the bricks more pale, do you mean pinker? More like the second brick texture?
I think if you made the white spots(NOT the grout) a bit more red, and the red spots a bit more white, you'd hit the nail on the head.

I tried a couple of times last night and I just couldn't get the black spots on the birch to look right.
I'm sure if you keep trying, you'll get it.  The rest of your work has turned out well so far.

Well, I was working on the different ores earlier.

My gold looks like gold nuggets in a river bottom

My iron looks like cast iron/wrought iron, similar to the nails I used in the wood textures. This will be used in most textures when hinges, nails, or bolts are needed

My diamond and ruby bases are done, I just need to find a cover that looks fine

Image 1 is my test gold, my test iron, and my base diamond, ruby and sapphire.

Image 2 and 3 are tests on how to cover the gems to make them look like ores.

Note: None of the gems are finished textures. I just want to play around and see what looks best, its likely that the final product wont be a base with a cover over it, but a rock with handcrafted gems

Here are my thoughts.
Iron looks very nice. Gold should maybe appear a little more... chunky... I guess. The gemstone ores should look rough, as gems aren't naturally found cut to perfection. And the diamond should be white as most diamonds are. All of the rest of the colours are great, though.

I get what you're going for with the Gold and Iron, But i think the gold needs to have a little more Yellow/Gold colour in it, It currently looks kinda like copper.

I also think the iron could be used for Titanium, Since it's closer to what Titanium looks like in Original HD This would keep the texture, But also allow for you to make a different iron texture that could be used for different purposes.

Very nice results you got there. What effects are you using to get that?

Depends on the blocks, but most of the time I just make a block one color.

Then I use similar colors and other colors I want to see on it either using the circle or the line tool. Based on the texture, ill either use bigger or smaller circles, longer or smaller lines, straight or criss crossed etc.

Then ill resize it really small and tile it. Once its tiled ill look for patterns I want to see in the final product. So stones will have rounder patterns, whereas grass and dirt will be more random.

Then I randomly put the different patterns I like on top of each other to make it look different all around, sometimes only taking half a pattern or two at a time.

It sounds kinda complicated, but its the fastest way to make cool looking textures. I kinda perfected in in my senior game design class because sometimes we would have 2-3 days to create games and I didn't have time to make super detailed environments

Titanium is actually a whitish, almost silver color. So I was thinking about making titanium look like silver, since iron was a much cheaper building material in the west and silver would be more expensive to build with
