Gaming / Broken Age

Broken Age

Broken Age is the first game on my list to write as much as I can about. I guess Iíll start with a little bit of backstory eh?

What is Broken Age?

Broken Age is a single player point-and-click adventure video game developed by Double Fine Productions. It was originally kickstarted with a goal of $400,000 but due to popularity and well placed promotion they received much, much more than originally anticipated. $3.45 million to be exact from over 87,000 backers. Originally planned to be released as a whole but due to restraints on money even with more than they asked for they need more to finish. ďEven though we received much more money from our Kickstarter than we, or anybody anticipated, that didnít stop me from getting excited and designing a game so big that it would need even more money,Ē Schafer wrote in a letter to the backers. So the game was split into two parts. The first chapter was released on Steam and other services to help gain more money to complete the project. Act 2 is scheduled for a release by the end of 2014.

The game itself has two different stories that individually revolve around a girl Vella and a boy called shay and can be played through in any order and can switch to the other at any time. While not directly affecting each other apart from somehow storywise. The two have inventories, can interact with things, can solve puzzles, and donít forget clicking! These actions however can only be performed in there respective stories so for example Vella cannot give Shay a cupcake.

Broken Age also has a whole cast of voice actors. Ranging from

Elijah Wood as Shay
Masasa Moyo as Vella
Jack Black as Harmíny Lightbeard
Wil Wheaton as Curtis The Lumberjack
Jennifer Hale as Mom
Pendleton Ward as Gus
and a lot more and maybe even a whole new cast in chapter two! So thatís kinda it for what the game is. You know how it started, where it is now, and the basic idea so I guess itís time to move on.

What Do I Think of the Game?

Well I for one am obsessed with this game. I love the hand drawn art style ranging from a cloud city to a space station, I love the animations of the characters they may be hand drawn but you can tell exactly what emotion theyíre feeling, I love the witty humor (a certain stool joke was a little weird for some but I thought it was great), I love the story, Itís left me wanting more and wanting to explore every nook and cranny, I love the voice actors and the characters behind them. They are all very unique and they seem to have just amount of right NPCís in each place to make the world seem alive.

The few problems I do have though are the fact that while the puzzles are enjoyable they are a little bit easy but I assume this is to ease people into the game. The next act is rumored to ramp up the difficulty so that does make me excited and should hopefully add more of a challenge and increase the game time. Also Iím a little annoyed at the questions Iíve been left with. Of course I know that there will be answers in act two but Iím a little worried because I have a lot of questions. No really probably 14 lines of them. I need answers! But in all serious the way that act 1 ended made me worried that those ones as well as all the ones coming with act 2 might not be answered. My last problem is my favorite character in the game so far did not get enough screen time and warning because this is a very slight spoiler. I am of course talking about this guy.

Thatís right! Itís a spoon and guess what he does, he talks! Can we just call him Steve from now on? In all seriousness though I have no problem with his screen time I just wanted to bring light to this character.

Should You Buy the Game?

Well do you like point-and-click games? If so then chances are youíre going to love this game to bits but if not then you could find yourself becoming annoyed with just clicking in a certain order but thatís just personal preference and thatís okay. If you are a person who doesnít like the genre of game they might be able to try and play through and be won over by the dialogue, story, and impressive voice cast. If you decide to take that risk then itís your choice but just remember itís a gamble. Would you play a genre of game that you donít like just for the story?

What Do I Give Broken Age?

Out of 10 I give the first act of Broken Age a solid 7.5/10 and when the second act this score may even change.

Did You Like This?

This is my first time doing something like this and I honestly enjoyed doing it so let me know and I may do more. Did you enjoy this?

Knock, knock, knock. Isn't it funny? You get used to so many things in your life until they just become habits. Habits that we don't even give a second thought when doing them. Like a knock on a door, we don't even think of the possibilities of what could happen and yet still we automatically make the connection that a knock must mean someone's there, right? It must do, logic must play a factor otherwise what's real? What's anything? No, this is about habits. About mine and about me.

It started when I was a kid. I say started but really I was just like everyone else. I was born like a normal person, acted like a normal person and was a normal person. I used to have this weird habit where I would constantly pick up pieces of junk. Ha, ha, I remember to this day thinking that if I could pick them up and collect them then I'd be able to make something cool. At least to a child anyway. I did this for days on end taking these weird things like rocks and pieces of metal home and soon realised that I was a child and didn't really have the knowledge to build something cool like a robot of of a couple of rocks and a few bits of metal. Nevertheless I continued, collecting this worthless stuff until one day I was walking home from school for one of the first times and I found a small box on the side of the rode.

I spotted it from afar and it immediately peaked my interest. At first I didn't grab it. It almost felt wrong like at that point I realised that these things I had been collecting were wrong but there was no way I was going to stop there. I waited around a bit and when I was sure no one was around I ran over to grab the box. It was on the side of the road so someone must've threw it out of there car. As soon as I picked it up I stuffed it under my shirt and went home trying not to let anyone see that I had the box. When I got home I snuck it past my mom and went into my room to examine it properly. I don't know why I didn't tell my mom I guess I really was feeling guilty for taking it. As I held it in my hands I realised how large the box was. I could balance it on one hand but to carry it around properly I needed two. It was a dark navi blue colour and on each face it was slightly indented that created a frame around the edges.

On each of the faces there were strange markings in gold. I wouldn't go as far as to say "alien" but at the time that's what it reminded me of. It was probably just fancy writing. As I ran my fingers across the edges I cut my fingers. When I went to look I saw there was blood but also a splinter lodged in there. After a couple of knocks on the box I was pretty sure it was made out of wood. I was ready to begin to investigating further until I heard footsteps coming up the stairs. It was my mother! I scrambled around and searched quickly for a place to hide the box. The cupboard! Of course! It was just in time because as I was jumping back onto my bed my mom came in. She was asking what I wanted for dinner. After us arguing about it for a few seconds I told us that I didn't mind and she went back downstairs saying that she'd just make some fish fingers and that was that.

After that I well don't remember. I think I fell asleep but by the time I woke up my dinner was done. I went down and say with my family. My mother and father to be more precise. We sat and ate and talked. It was nice. We did this almost every day but I enjoyed the interaction no less each day. After we had finished the meal of fish fingers, beans, and chips my mom brought out three bowls of custard.

Your Art / Today I Saw A Devil

Today I saw a Devil,
His skin was neither black,
Nor white,
Nor crimson.

Today I saw a Devil,
His gaze left no trace of fear,
No imprint.

Today I saw a Devil,
His movements matched mine,
No difference.

Today I saw a Devil,
His touch was blocked by force,
a barrier.

Today I see no Devil,
This mirror now cracked,
Now broken,
Now faded.

Your Art / Grey Room

Hey, guys. This is a choose your own adventure kind of thing so i'll write something new every time someone replies. Ok? Ok. I kinda stole this idea from Pebphiz except i'm not creative enough to draw so I did this. Anyway onto the beginning.

You wake up in a darkened room. After a few minutes of coming to your senses you notice a single bed and a toilet. You could be still disorientated but you don't see a door. You have no memory of how you got here or why but you feel an urge to escape. You stand up and begin to put this plan into motion.

>Take crap in toilet.

Spoiler for Hidden Content:

Your stomach begins to rumble like crazy and you're struck with the knowledge that you're going to crap yourself. You run over to the toilet and without thinking you pull down you pants and crap like crazy. It must have been something you ate... You look around for some toilet paper and find none, you decide that you can't just walk around with crap everywhere so you use your underwear efficiently as toilet paper. Now the task of flushing the toilet falls upon you, and of course it's broken. The stench of poop fills the room and you have yet another reason to find a way out.

> Stuff bed sheets down the toilet.

Spoiler for Hidden Content:

You run over to the bed and rip the bed sheets off. Maybe stuffing these down the toilet will stop the smell? You carry them over and shove them down and to your surprise it's stops the smell for now. You go back to the bed and sit down so you can decide what to do next. As soon as you sit down you feel something poke you in the butt. You stand up to investigate and find a key with a note attached. The note reads "Your name is Steve, you or rather we used to be so great until they took it away from us. Those monsters will get what's coming to them soon enough but don't worry you'll understand soon. Enclosed I have left a key. Look up."

> Look up, see a hatch and unlock it to escape.

Spoiler for Hidden Content:

You look up above you as the note says and see a hatch. "This is your way to escape" you think to yourself! Then you see a lock on the hatch. The key in the note must unlock the hatch right? You grab the key and stand on the edge of your toes as you try to unlock the lock, you reach further and further until you jam it in and try to turn... It doesn't open. You are almost about to give into despair when you hear a feint clicking noise coming from the bed. "What could it be?" You ask yourself. Your eyes now adjusting to the light can now see that apart from the toilet, the bed, and the hatch that the room is just four grey walls.

> Check under bed.

Spoiler for Hidden Content:
You check under the bed and find a bomb... Ha, ha, just kidding. You check under the bed and find nothing but dust. You see a few McRibroaches and think to yourself that if worse comes to worse than they could become a food source. You don't think about it for till long before you shudder at the idea of putting one in your mouth. You stand up and wonder what made the noise. It definitely came from here, your're sure of it. You decide that you can take no more of the bed's trickery and pull it away from the wall. In doing so you reveal a small blue door. Was it this that unlocked? It couldn't be. Only a rat could fit through here. Your thoughts running while you ponder what to do next.

> Noclip through the wall.

Spoiler for Hidden Content:
You suddenly remember the power of Noclipping! If it works in video games then why can't it work here? You back against the opposite wall with the toilet to make sure you get a run up. Bang! As you hit your head against the wall you realise that maybe nocliping is only in video games. You also get the feeling that maybe this dumb idea was the reason you woke up without your memory. While now slightly dazed your annoyance starts to rise with the blue door. It's colour seems somewhat beckoning.

> Try noclipping again.

Spoiler for Hidden Content:
You know it didn't work last time but maybe it really does if you just believe! No, it doesn't work. Really it doesn't. You have now given yourself a headache. It hurts so much that you start to feel sleepy. Maybe you're bleeding but you're too scared to check. You move back to the task at hand which is escaping, remember!? You get down on the floor to investigate the small blue door. You put your ear up against the door and hear an alarm.

You're startled and jolt backwards. You hit your head on the floor, you can't take any more. This time you know you're bleeding but you're too dizzy to move. The sound of the alarm is so loud that your ears feel like they're bursting and the last thing you remember is seeing the hatch above you slowly open before you pass out. You wake up in your bedroom... That damn dream again. You look over at your alarm clock and check the time. 8AM, when your alarm goes off. You lie in your bed thinking about why on Earth you kept no-clipping in the dream. What a stupid idea!

> Go eat breakfast and get ready/dressed for school.

Spoiler for Hidden Content:
Oh no! School! You rush around you bedroom desperately searching for your school clothes. You don't let the plies of video game memorabilia and empty cans and packets of food stand in your way of finding the treasured school clothes. You find them! Right in the cupboard where your Mom told you she put them last night... That's not stopping you though! You pick up the school clothes and place them in your inventory then equip them. As a result your pajamas replace the slot that the school clothes took in your inventory. You glance at the alarm clock and see the time, 8:40! You're late for school!

You rush downstairs hoping to get any scraps of breakfast that remain. As you step into your kitchen you see your family, your big brother and your mother, cooking breakfast for him but here's not in his school uniform... Then you remember. School was cancelled today.  Maybe that knock to the head in the dream affected you in real life? You try to get away but as your mother turns round to give your brother some more bacon she notices you. They both spend the next few minutes ridiculing you for understandable mistake. Ugh, how you hate them. You can take no more. You steal some bacon from your brother and run back upstairs into your room. At least there they can't bother you. Now, what to do?

> Search for some explosives.

Spoiler for Hidden Content:
You hatch an evil plan and decide to find some explosives. You search around your room but you find nothing. One of these days you'll find something worthwhile in this room! You hop on your computer and decide that if you can't find any explosives then you'll have to make your own. After 10 seconds of searching you think you've found the perfect website. Admittedly if it took you any longer to find it you'd probably give up because of your small attention span.  You find out that you only need three things to make the device that will bring about the end of the world! Wait no, you're not that evil. You're only going to kill your mother and brother.

A matchbox, tape, and scissors. That's all you need. The tape was the first object you desired. You swear you had it in your room sometime last night to hang up your new game poster. Ah ha! There it is! You find it surprisingly quickly and place it in your inventory. Next you decide to get the scissors. You remember there being a pair in the upstairs bathroom, cleverly hidden in case you needed to chase of zombies while pooping. You get them without detection and also placed them in your inventory. Now it's time to get the matchbox but you have no idea where it could be. If only there was some mysterious outside force that could help with what to do next. What do next?

Your Art / True
« on: October 24, 2013, 03:03:09 PM »
The story I am about to tell you is one hundred percent true. Or was is false. I can never remember the difference. This story is one that I am telling you right now. One that is and will be one full of suspense, shock, horror and have full of romance. No, no, no. I liked the true opening more. Yes, that's this story is True.

It started when I was a young boy. That's how stories start right? This is my first memory and one that I kept with me for the rest of my life. I was young, very young so young that I had only just started walking and my first word, what was it? "Dark" yes that was it. Dark was my first word.  I remember the pale moonlight hitting my face as I tried to sleep. It was so bright, so intense that I could barely open my eyes. I had to escape it, and I did. I climbed out of my bed and crawled out of the room as the light intensified. I was scared, so very scared and I didn't know why. I tried to go straight to my Mom and Dad in room opposite. I crawled faster and faster towards their room but the light caught up to me. It engulfed me in its glow. Soon enough it engulfed everything around me. My Mom, my Dad my vision. I woke up in a pitch black room. After almost being blinded by the moonlight, seeing dark once again was comforting. In front of me was a man fully clad in medieval armour. He simply said "Ha, so it is you after all. Here kid take this you're going to need it." He handed me a small glass ball and disappeared. Inside it I could on see one thing, the moon.

The blinding light came once again. It ripped through the darkness that had kept me calm with ease and then the blinding light made contact with me once again. I woke up for the third time but now I was in the kitchen of my own home and in my hand clasped tight was the glass ball that the knight had gave me. I tried to question what had happened but just then I heard a noise. Footsteps! Shuffling around in the corners of the room. My eyes had still not adjusted to the light and I tried desperately to make out what they were? "Mom? Dad?" I asked. No reply. I felt alone and scared I wanted them to be here but they weren't, I need help.

They figures started to walk closer revealing more and more of themselves with each step. I knew that they had noticed me by now and I new that there was nothing I could do. I could have tried running but what good would that have done? I was barely able to walk. So I just sat there, watching them get closer and closer. Being very careful as to where to place each step. In a matter of seconds they were in front of me. One of them bent down and put his hand out aiming straight for the orb while again being very careful with each movement. As he was about to touch it I saw it's face. It was my mother. Her eyes gouged out by what I assume today to be the moon but that makes me crazy, right?

I began to feel woozy seeing my mothers face like that and fell backward on the floor and in the process hitting my head. The glass ball fell out of my hand and into whatever was left of my Mom. I looked up to see my Dad standing over me. What ever had done this to my mother had done the same to him. It must have been him who had caused me to fall over and it was the floor that caused this blood to seep out of my head. My two former parents both shuffled in front of me to closely examine the ball. As I faded out of consciousness I remember thinking "This blood is me? I am leaving myself and soon I'll be nothing but a puddle." Then the darkness consumed me and I was nothing but a dying child on the floor, sleeping through his last moments.
