Title: Steam Trailer
Post by: Craig on October 22, 2014, 09:32:29 PM
Currently the only thing holding us back from trying to get Total Miner greenlit on Steam is lack of a good trailer video.

If anybody here is able to make us a high quality HD trailer or knows of someone who can, then please let me know via pm.

The person making the trailer will need:

Self reliance.
An HD capture card.
A high level of skill and creativity in editing videos.
Some previous work they can show us.
Access to some of TM's most exceptional creations.
A high level knowledge of the game.

We need an interesting, creative, high quality trailer to maximize our chances of getting greenlit asap. Obviously it will need to showcase the games best features.

Payment will be cash.

Please do not go off and make a trailer without speaking to me first via pm.

Valve needs to approve you for release on their store. So they have a process called Greenlight. Games that want to be released there put up a page, with information, screenshots, videos, etc of their game.. and then Steam users vote on it. As far as anything more specific than that, I don't know. As best I can tell most of the developers that have been through Greenlight before don't really understand the exact process, so we can't really give you any specific details beyond that

I've got a few questions regarding making a trailer:

- Is this going to be something appointed to someone, who will then make the trailer? Kind of like we are submitting our "resumes/CVs" to you in terms of previous video footage, and you are "hiring" one of us to make it?
Or is it like a normal contest; everyone pitches in their best trailer and the winner chosen from the group receives the prize?

- Are there restrictions for the trailer in terms of copyright? I.e. can the trailer include songs that are not hosted on a royalty-free site, or can we put any song that our heart desires in the trailer?
Just want to make sure that we aren't breaking any rules in regards to "advertising" on Steam Greenlight.

- Are there specific game elements that you would want shown?
I assume the big features like scripting, skills, different game types, creative tools, and day/night cycles would probably want to be highlighted, but is there anything you want emphasized? Perhaps more on the "look what the community has built, and you can too!!" as opposed to "look what features the game has!!" or a combination of both?

- Is there a maximum length to the video, or will this be a grand long showcase of all Total Miner has to offer?

I think the first option is the fairest and most workable.

No copyrighted material can be used in the trailer.

I'm not sure yet. I expect there will be some discussion, but essentially, whatever makes the game as attractive as possible for greenlight.

Is there a maximum length to the video, or will this be a grand long showcase of all Total Miner has to offer?
I'll double check, but I suspect it will be around 2 minutes.

also you might want to have a few of your friends go over it and make sure all grammar is correct as well. Use colors that complement each other if you color the different text. And do not use comic sans as it makes you look like a moron.

As much as it would be nice to see the great builds and creations from the community of Total Miner, I believe a decent bit of the video should be dedicated to scripts and showing off the great deal of potential bring to Total Miner. At this point I am wholly convinced that scripts are the signature game-play mechanic of Total Miner and what really sets Total Miner aparts from being just another "crappy minecraft clone" and more of a RPG Maker/Game Maker. Of course, that's just my advice (for what that's worth) for anyone thinking of making this trailer as I don't have the equipment to do so myself but I hope you at least consider this.

To my understanding, you can post more than just 1 video to steam, other than the single necessary trailer. While I wholeheartedly agree that you should have at least 1 all-encompassing vid that showcases total miner as a whole, I would also think that having a few more videos that go more in-depth about certain aspects of the game (that players might not understand at first glance) would be good to keep in mind.

Can I suggest turning in game music off when recording and instead playing one or two of the songs as audio through out the video. This would be incase a collection of clips are used to form the trailer.

When dauntless.......errr I mean when sombody wins if you want Craig I can work with them on a short (8-10 seconds) video of the custom paintings by putting a build for one of my paintings (like my pay-phone) in there world then I will help dauntless...err I mean whoever wins to line up the camera to get the best picture then have them start recording switch to the camera take a picture then quickly fly around the build to show that it was built in 3D (as most people thinks it 2D pixel art) then land and place the painting and set the picture. After that the words "use your imagination" will be displayed and show some more paintings.

Just a idea.

These are some of the things i would recommend being in it, I won't be attempting the trailer as i am new to the editing so would not be able to use many Lighting effects

-Day Night
-Skills
-Scripts
-Copy & Paste
-Online multiplayer/world listing (As not many PC games use this and require you to make a server to even play online)
-Show creation using lots of flowing water

I think the best trailer maps would be in Pringles Creations and a few others like Nexus City. I can also terraform a big sign of TotalMiner and send it to the person in charge of this trailer. i have all the requirements for this treiler but i dont have a capture card

and a short clip of 2 Steves in minecraft talking about how bored they are. Then we can have a second trailer that's like a political ad. "Minecraft only wants to go to Congress to fill his own pockets. Vote totalminer 2014"

showing the online multilayer listings would not be allowed would it? Because of the xbox X and Y buttons at the bottom of the screen?

I think including Steve and MineCraft would break the no copyright rule.

Okay, I have one question...

- What edition of the game is this trailer gonna be used for? (PC, Xbox, etc.) If it's for the PC edition, wouldn't you need to have PC video to showcase, not footage of console gameplay? I say this because I've seen this happen quite a few times on Steam where games became very unpopular because they didn't show gameplay of the game THEY would be getting, not console people.

That's all, hopefully you get around to answering. :D Have a good one.

The games will be the same, regardless of what platform. Most likely some additions will come around to PC that surpasses the console version, due to no indie restrictions being set in place, but the core gameplay and mechanics will remain uniform throughout all versions.

There's no point spending the time to do the port unless the games gets greenlit. It then makes sense to do a PC gameplay video ready for the PC release.

People have short attention spans!
Just throw everything interesting into the game and keep it within 1 minuite.
The overwelming amount of stuff will just make the person think...
Wait, il watch that again.
The next time:

1 min would mean we can only put a few features in the trailer, the longer the trailer the more stuff we can put in it, 3 mins is the average time for a trailer like this in most cases.

Uploading ATM, ill make my own topic soon. you can check it out then. Im not a pro editor by any means.. so frankly its held together with thumbtacks and Elmer's glue, I Will work on a revised better version once I get peoples feedback, but figured somethings better than nothing.

Being greenlit will Be the lifesource of the TM PC port, Im assuming its not worth his time "yet" to port the game to PC if it does not get greenlit.. which wont happen because it will.

Hey!, I'd Love to help but im restricted cause i dont have a capture card. I can however make art! I'm willing to make a quick screen play just to get the jest of it. what we do need to organize though is what we want incorporated! heres my suggestions
Building: this is like 40% of the game so duh we need this
digging: again this is a large portion of the game
crafting: another big part of the game so we need to showcase it and it's expansiveness, we can do that through crafting a few cool items and scrolling through the quick craft list.
Skill system: I know this is a big positive to the game, ive gotten people to play it just for the stats! not including this in the trailer would be a crime! this can be simply and quickly put in, just show some scrolling through the skills so people can see all there is to offer.
Combat: obviously we need to include combat, both pvp and pve to show off all capabilities!
Exploration: definately need to show some exploring, whether it be the oasis, underworld, big caves, whatever it is make it grand and look badass!
Potential: we need to show off some of those big builds and awesome stuff so that people can see that you can make some awesome stuff in the game. most importantly INSPIRE PEOPLE.

Also side note: when building try to build with more unique pieces so people know there's more than just cubes. and as for digging try to get some cave in footage and spider dens.
