Title: YouTube - Conmaan
Post by: Gary on January 12, 2016, 06:33:26 PM
Conmaan's Youtube - Description/Updates

Hey everyone. So, I recently cleaned out my youtube channel of all its existing content (with the exception of my backpack tutorial). Today (9/20) I just released a new informational vid talking about the PC update and the advantages of Steam over the indie marketplace. Until PC release, most of my Total Miner videos are going to be consisting of informational videos on update notes (all public info), and possibly some more opinion-based video essays (a la kaptainkristian, minus the incredible music and incredible videography). Hope everyone enjoys, and if you have any feedback, criticism, or inquiries, inbox me or comment!

The Good Stuff:

It was a bit hard to hear you due to the music. I recommend turning it down just a little but otherwise it was a good video.

Yeah, I didn't realize until after I recorded it that the music was so loud.

Apparently youtube's audio editor did something weird, so I reverted my changes. Should take a couple of minutes to restore the audio, but it'll be back up soon enough!

There's audio at the very end. Really really loud audio that freaked me out because I was skipping through the video with headphones at max volume.

I use windows movie maker to edit video, and audacity for audio.

I'll just lay out my process, so it should answer your question:

First I record audio through audacity. I lay out what I want to say on a sheet of paper beforehand and do a couple of dry runs.

Then I record some footage I can have play during my video, but note that the footage is shot separately from my audio recording. So I'm not doing both of these things at once. It helps to get rid of awkward pauses etc.

Then I upload the video to movie maker, mute the audio that OBS recorded while I was recording the video, and then attach the audio from Audacity that I recorded beforehand.

Then I upload the video to youtube, and add any creative commons music that I think would fit.

But when you exported it from movie maker to upload it youtube added the clip you removed after the audio was finished. Or did you forget to do that in movie maker?

No the audio was removed for an entirely different reason.

Topic: NPC Behaviors for Total Miner PC :)

There's also something I left out, which I'll make a video on at some point in the future, probably either this weekend or next week.

As always, I'd love to think what everyone thinks. I feel like this is probably my best video thusfar.

Another new video's up and running.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=80FC0BN0aSM

Its on the debug tool, which is a new tool coming to total miner PC. There's a couple of features of it that I left out for the sake of time, such as a green/red indicator to see whether a node failed its check, but there'll be an advanced tutorial in the future to cover everything in more detail. If anyone's got any questions in terms of how the item works, I'd be happy to share.

2 questions.

1: Why is the debug tool changing the dynamic of the behaviour when it is used?
It is very clear that when it was active, The NPC's wandering was erratic and weird, Yet when it was inactive, The wandering looked normal and more natural.

2: Why is the sun so tiny? I realize that it's more realistic that way, But it feels odd to me.

Increased View Distance. You can adjust it now and notice that the sun will change size.

1: Actually I didn't  notice that when making the video. Could be a bug of some sort, not sure.

2: I think it looks better smaller. Less overwhelming. Not sure about the view distance thing since it didn't change the size of the sun for me in game, but that could very well be a factor in the console version.

It is because in order to visually follow the execution of the nodes, the execution has to be slowed down. If it was not slowed down, the nodes are executed so fast, you would not be able to follow the execution and it would not be useful.

The wandering is affected because of this.

Could something like this be added for scripts? Sure, It's easy enough to add a notify to areas to make sure they are working, But you can do the same thing with NPCs. In addition, Having a visual indicator as to where a script is failing would be really useful.

Especially if the game told you what the script was trying to do.

I can't tell you how many times I've messed up on a script by accidentally using global history. Those kinds of problems aren't easily noticed, And some way to quickly spot them would be great.

It may be redundant at times, But I think it would be really useful.

It is possible.

It is also possible to use the same visual drag/drop node editor to create scripts. Which would have the added benefit of supporting AND/OR condtionals and nested conditionals.

Dear Craig

This is all I ask, it would benefit people so well in debugging scripts and would allow for people to more easily show scripts and the flow of them rather than have to write a 3 paragraph essay on how they work. Also i could see it being great for creating script "templates" if you will were the creator can set up a base script and people could then add to it. Yes I know people can do this now but people don't and i think for PC people and new players will have a more friendly introduction to scripts than us. I said it on the steam if the NPC behavior editor could be also used fore the script you said yes it could so can we change that could to yes it will :).

Personally, I don't like I as the inventory key. It's kinda across the keyboard from the other keys that you use often.

I believe MC's inventory key was I for a while, And it was not well received because of this fact.

I'm not sure what would be better due to E being prospect, But I feels wrong.

I didn't hear "q" being a used key, what about that? Or even having the prospect on "q" and the inventory key on "e".
Title: Re: YouTube - Conmaan
Post by: Gary on November 11, 2016, 12:42:03 PM
Yeah "Q" doesn't serve as a hotkey atm, so that would be a great alternative.

I feel like, for now, having the inventory separated makes sense because it isn't the only (or in my opinion not even the most used) menu screen, but hopefully if they all get consolidated into one, it can be moved to Q.

Regardless, though, it's all customizeable so you'd be able to set it as whatever you want.

Good news! I did a little bit of research on the interwebs to find out if there were any settings I could change that would make my video quality better when recording, and I tested them out and now have significantly better resolution. So next time I publish a video (which will hopefully be sometime tomorrow morning) I'd like to hear if you guys notice the difference.

Call me old fashioned, But I don't like this bright, Glidey, Floaty menu thing that PC has now.

I liked the darker, Grounded, Traditional menu we had before.

I feel like it fit better with the feel you get from the game's music and textures.
In addition, It doesn't seem right to me for the menu to slide around while you are moving the cursor.

Also, A bit of feedback on the armour equip dummy. the slots should have a general outline of what goes there. It may not be obvious to a new player that the necklace slot is for a necklace and not a chestplate. In addition, It is certainly not obvious that gauntlets go on the right slot, And rings go on the left.

In all likelihood the "textures" of the current pause menu UI is in its early stages, and will likely see some changes to be more representative of the game and its aesthetic theme.

As for the "glidey-ness", I kind of like it. It needs a bit of tweaks, but overall I'd say it has a very organic, interactive vibe to it.

Also, I love the armor idea.

Another video up! 3 in one week, I'm on a roll! XD

This one's episode 3 of my series on modding. In it, I change the stats of a spider NPC to make it huge, strong, and mean.

New video up. Kind of pre-preemptive, but still important information to have. Also, this is my first video with my updated intro.

Is the world made up of one file inside of the folder? Or multiple?

If the latter, then compressing it with a file archiver is a good idea. A good free one is 7-zip (http://www.7-zip.org)

It might also help shrink the size to speed up transfers if it's a large file.

It's also a good way to send multiple worlds, components etc... at the same time.

Multiple, so archiving files and sending them through .zip's are your best bet.

I'd suggest just using Windows Explorer - Send to - Compressed (zip) folder. Does the same thing and you don't need to bother with WinZip or 7-zip.
