Steam Username for TMF
« on: November 24, 2017, 09:48:06 PM »
So what name will show when you play total miner forge on steam?  ( AKA Multiplayer. When it comes out. )   Will it show your Username or profile name? If its your profile name that can mess with a lot of things.

Most games use profile names but most of the saving is done with the username soooo good question

It will be your profile name (the one you can change at anytime). Your username (the one you use to login with and is displayed at the top right of Steam) is only known to you and anyone you choose to give it to.

It wont mess anything up as all Steam games work like this.

Edit:

As you can see from the two examples below, the IP Address is used alongside your username to differentiate between two users using the same username. Some games like Minecraft also use a UUID (Universally Unique IDentifier) to further confirm the account the username is being used with.

Team Fortress 2:

Client "Fuertey" connected (01.02.03.004:27005)

Minecraft:

[05:59:56] [User Authenticator #1/INFO]: UUID of player Fuertey is 8667ba71-b85a-4004-af54-457a9734eed7
[05:59:57] [Server thread/INFO]: Fuertey[/01.02.03.004:50598] logged in with entity id 224
[06:00:14] [Server thread/INFO]: Fuertey lost connection: Disconnected
[06:00:14] [Server thread/INFO]: Fuertey left the game

How will the game work with locked chests ? Jeff owns this chest another Jeff logs in ooo he can open it. How will the code read for that , same with local skills and other things? Will it go by IP ? Or what ?

Read my post again. Seems I didn't modify it in time  :)

In the case of Minecraft, your UUID would remain the same whether you used Jeff1, Jeff10 or Jeff1000 as your username. All items and chests etc.... would be linked to the UUID and not your username.

The easiest way for TM on Steam would be for anything related to that username being stored under the Steam username that profile belongs to. That way you would be able to change your Steam profile name (and your TM display name) anytime you wish without losing any stats or items. It would also stop other players choosing the same username and getting your stuff.
